I Can't Speak

How are some people so good at talking with others? What's the secret that extroverts have that introverts could use?

I'm a self-diagnosed introvert.

No, I don't dislike being around people. I love being around people. But for me, an introvert, I have this much energy for small talk, group interactions, being entertaining, that gets quickly tapped out. Then, I need to recharge.

I've always been drawn to extroverts. You know the type: social butterfly, moving easily from conversation to conversation, generating energy from the people around them. What makes them so happy in these interactions?

I'm real good in situations where I can exercise control, like giving a presentation, or coaching a group as a subject matter expert. But quiet, intimate, get-to-know-you moments? Ack! Small talk! Weather, family, job, hobbies...ack!

What's the thing that--for me--is sucking the energy from those situations? Is it that there's no meat there? Vacuous, substance-less banter? Why do some people like that?

One day, I found improv. Improv comedy, to be accurate. I was around people, sure, but also I was entertained and entertaining without exhaustion. What's the secret? There was a pattern: break the ice with some on-ramp; lowering the stakes by learning to embrace mistakes; realizing mistakes are delightful pivot points in a conversation; listening carefully; accepting what I've heard; building on that; sharing the spotlight; prompting; being authentic.

I can follow a pattern! Jeepers, just look at the spreadsheets I've created. Unlocking the complex nuances of interpersonal exchanges with a pattern I can practice made a huge difference in my enthusiasm for interacting in public. That's a lot of $20 words. More simply, I had an action plan.

I didn't need to control the situation, like I do when I'm the star. No, I needed to learn how to balance on a surfboard...and then just ride.

Well guess what? It's a thing that can be learned. Tremendously useful for one-on-one conversations. Nuclear level in groups, at work, home, play.
